ABOUT OUR SERVICE

Flightseeing.is is operated by Atlantsflug, a family-owned aviation company based in South Iceland.

Jón, the founder of Atlantsflug, started flying over Skaftafell National Park more than 25 years ago. What began as a passion for aviation, the outdoors and adventure has grown into a dedicated flightseeing operation offering helicopter and airplane tours across some of Iceland’s most unique landscapes.

Our private airstrip and terminal, Skaftafell Terminal, is located in the heart of Vatnajökull National Park, just east of the junction to Skaftafell. This location allows us easy access to Europe‘s largest glacier, Vatnajökull, the highlands along with the south coast, offering excellent access to some of Iceland’s most remarkable landscapes.

Along with offering helicopter and airplane tours from Skaftafell Terminal, we also operate helicopter tours from Reykjavík, giving access to volcanic landscapes, geothermal areas and the surrounding coastline.

We also have our own Part.145 maintenance facility, fully compliant with EASA rules and regulations.

Safety

Safety is our main priority. All our operations comply with, and continuously evolve alongside, the strict aviation safety standards of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), covering daily operations, crew training and maintenance.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Our journey began over 25 years ago. Below are a few moments that show how things have evolved over the years.

The adventure begins

For over 25 years, the founder and CEO of Atlantsflug, Jón Grétar, has been offering sightseeing flights from Skaftafell Airport—and it all began in a small shed.

Pilots would eat, sleep and handle customers from this one space, long before mobile phones and the internet. It may seem hard to imagine today, but it was the beginning of something special.

A step forward

Later, the cabin shown in the image above was moved to Skaftafell—transported overnight by truck from Reykjavík—marking a significant step forward. With separate bedrooms, a kitchen and proper facilities, it became a more comfortable base for both work and daily life.

Over the years, we have welcomed thousands of customers, built lasting friendships and shared many memorable moments. For that, we are incredibly grateful.

Today, we continue to build on this foundation and look forward to welcoming guests to experience Iceland from above for many years to come.

Looking ahead

As the operation grew, so did the ambition to offer year-round service and expand the experience for our customers. This led to the development of our hangar and reception area at Skaftafell Terminal.

The process took years, but with the help of dedicated colleagues and friends, we were able to bring it to life. Since opening in 2018, Skaftafell Terminal has allowed us to continue growing while welcoming guests to experience Iceland from above.
